It's reasonable to discuss things rationally with your physician. It's also reasonable to explore different physician options. Good luck!

Your advice is sound and I completely understand all the points you illustrated. My Dr. told me today when I asked about using a known sperm donor "Don't go there." and told me that was how his colleages felt as well.

I am 41, have had multiple problems with endometriosis and will have to use a gestational carrier. I realize I only have a 15-20% chance of success. I have retained an attorney specializing in family law.

I am not married, but have been living with someone for several years. I would prefer to use the sperm of my domestic partner, have the attorney draw up the necessary legal contracts stating that my boyfriend will in no way be liable for child support.

Is it unreasonable for me to ask my physician to go against clinic policy and use a known sperm donor?

Your situation is a complicated one and somewhat of a social dilemma rather than a medical dilemma. If you are mentally and emotionally eager to have children NOW, then there's better hope for you than if you wait until you're 44 to start trying. But of course, you do have to take into account factors other than medical factors. Medicine can offer you the option of conceiving on your own with donor sperm, but only you can decide if that is appropriate for the well being of your future baby. Many women become single mothers by choice and are quite happy, but most of them have thought it over for a long time before taking that step. Also, you ask your question as an EITHER/OR, but some women who use donor sperm and have a baby, end up getting into a great relationship AFTER their baby is born. Best of luck!

Good advice. But what if the recipient of the sperm is not married or currently has no partner? What would your advice be to a woman who is 42 years old and wants to have a baby but is single (actually in a failing marriage)? Should she get sperm from an anonymous donor at a sperm bank OR try her chances on finding a partner who also wants to have kids soon? She biologically looks like 25 and has MANY interested men so coud hae one fairly quickly but is choosey because she is so intelligent, attractive and athletic. But the clock is still ticking and the age of the eggs don't lie.
