Bridgett, I wish you the best in growing your family with a second baby. As you have learned, adoption is not as easy as one would guess. It's good that you've stayed on top of all the paperwork. I'm guessing that you already know the answer to your question, but I'll correct one thing and remind you of another. Fibroids involve the uterus and not the ovary, and therefore, even if it looks as if they are pushing on an ovary, it's not likely to affect the FSH level. The second thing is that apparent miracles do happen. For example, people who have a 1 out of 500 chance of getting pregnant occasionally do so. In fact this would be expected to happen 1 out of 500 times. The better question to ask is what is the best action to take and it seems that you are on the right track because as you make sure to keep the adoption process going forward, you're also continuing to try on your own for that second miracle. Best of luck!

Dear Dr.
I am so glad I found a website that is very patient friendly. I may be asking for the absolute impossible but I just feel as if I am to have another baby. I had my first child at 42 against all odds. I was going to a specialtist that had told us we had a 1 in 200 chance of conceiving on our own and carrying full term but looking back my numbers were all in the normal range and we managed to become pregnant after having an HSG. I just this month had tests to measure FSH but after having an ultrasound it was found I have 5 fibroids including one that is on my right ovary. Would the fibroids have pushed the FSH levels to such high number as 30.1? I am 48 now and having a hard time facing the fact that the numbers are very much against me. I have regular cycles with the exception of two months ago which might be explained by the fibroids. I still feel as I did 6 years ago, that I am going to have another child. I guess I am looking for anyone to give me some hope that it is not too late. Is there any chance for me other than donor eggs?
thank you so much, I value and appreciate your time, expertise and wonderful sense of humor!
All the best, and Happy New Year,
Bridgett
ps we are in the process of a Chinese adoption which 12/26 a few days ago, we had our 3 year anniversary of our paperwork log in date in China...there seems to be no end in sight as for traveling to China to get our baby girl. I feel as if I have wasted what few years I had waiting for the adoption to come through....very sad and frustrating.

I received several emails asking for clarification regarding my comments about letrozole (Femara). I tend to avoid letrozole not because of fear of birth defects with regular use, but out of fear of birth defects if accidentally used when a patient is already pregnant. Although we give Clomid and letrozole only after a patient has had bleeding (a presumed period) there are always cases of Clomid accidentally given to a patient who is already pregnant. While that in itself is bad, it would be even worse if letrozole were given.
